Problem
VEA ( VERITAS Enterprise Administrator ) GUI no longer included in Storage Foundation 5.1
Environment
Storage Foundation 5.1
Solution
When the VERITAS product administrator attempts to launch VEA (VERITAS Enterprise Administrator ) GUI the following error is seen.
# /opt/VRTSob/bin/vea
VEA GUI is no longer packaged. Symantec recommends use of the SFM Console
to manage, monitor and report on multi-host environments. You can download
this utility at no charge from http://go.symantec.com/vom. If you wish to
continue using VEA GUI, it can be downloaded from the same web site.
Starting Storage Foundation 5.1 the VEA (VERITAS Enterprise Administrator) GUI as stated above will no longer be packaged.
Some things to know:
a. Even though VEA is no longer packaged with the product. There will still be a package VRTSob that will be installed as part of the product install. This package is required to be installed.
b. The vxsvc process must be in a running state on the SFM (Storage Foundation Manager ) server in order for the administrator to be able to "Administer" VxVM and VxFS objects, once the SFM client and add-on's have been installed and configured. See "Procedure to ensure that the SFM client can administer objects".
c. Even though VEA is no longer packaged as of now we still provide VEA as download separately.
Note: VEA will be discontinued in the future all customers are recommended to configure SFM moving forward.

Procedure to ensure that the SFM Client can administer objects:
a. Ensure that VRTSob is installed.
a. Ensure that VRTSob is installed.
for example,
Linux:
rpm -aq |grep VRTSob
Solaris:
pkginfo -l |grep VRTSob
HP-UX:
swlist |grep VRTSob
AIX:
lslpp -l |grep VRTSob
b. Ensure that vxsvc is activated and started by running the following.
/opt/VRTSob/bin/vxsvcctrl activate
/opt/VRTSob/bin/vxsvcctrl status
Current state of server : NOT RUNNING
/opt/VRTSob/bin/vxsvcctrl start
/opt/VRTSob/bin/vxsvcctrl status
Current state of server : RUNNING
Note: If you attempt to connect the SFM Client to the SFM Server without ensuring the vxsvc is in a running state. You will receive the following error:
Error V-383-1-851 VEA service on this host is down
c. Once the vxsvc process is determined to be in a running state. Install the Add-on "Storage Foundation Administration for Unix". Please see the Add-on instructions for more information.
d. Once the Add-on is installed you will need to restart the Web server which is running on the SFM Server.
/opt/VRTSsfmcs/cweb/sfmw restart
Now the administrator can select the server from the SFM server web browser and click "Administer" to administer VxVM and VxFS objects.
Note: If the Add-on "Storage Foundation Administration for Unix" was installed and later the administrator either added a server to be administered by SFM or realized that VRTSob was not installed and installed and started vxsvc so that SFM could manage the VxVM and VxFS objects. The following will occur:
- The administrator will get an error when trying to administer the server VxVM/VxFS objects.
Error V-39-53247-153 Please check vea configuration or the state of vea processes on this host.
- That is because the Add-on has not registered the client.
Solution:
Uninstall and Install the Add-on "Storage Foundation Administration for Unix". This will allow the Add-on to register the client that is now running vxsvc. In addition because the Add-on was installed again. The web server will need to be restarted on the SFM server, as noted in "step d". This will only have to be done once. Once the Add-on has registered the client that will be administered you will now only see the error when vxsvc is in a "Not running" state. Once vxsvc is started again no need to Uninstall and install the Add-on again as the Add-on has already registered the client. The key is that the SFM Server Add-on has to register the client and as of now this can only be done by doing an Uninstall and Install of the Add-on.
