A potential data loss issue has been discovered when backing up any DFSR (Distributed File System Replication) data in NetBackup Enterprise Server 7.0GA via Shadow Copy (with the DFS replication service running).

Solution

Introduction:
A potential data loss issue has been discovered when backing up any DFSR (Distributed File System Replication) data in NetBackup 7.0GA via Shadow Copy (with the DFS replication service running).  A Status 0 (successful) is reported, but no data is protected.  This behavior occurs on an upgrade to 7.0 or an initial install.  This issue affects only clients that support DFSR (such as Windows 2003 R2 and Windows 2008).  On these platforms, DFSR data should not be backed up unless a workaround or patch has been applied.

What is affected:
The following versions of NetBackup are affected by this issue, on all Windows Client platforms supporting DFSR:
- NetBackup Server/Enterprise Server 7.0

Note: The Etracks / Issues mentioned in this document do not affect NetBackup 6.0 or 6.5/.6.5.x, but these versions have been applied below so this issue can be noted and addressed in the event of an upgrade to 7.0.

How to determine if affected:
Data loss can occur if ALL of the following conditions are met:
- The NetBackup Client is one of the affected servers mentioned above, running on a supported Windows DFSR platform
- DFSR data is selected for backup via Shadow Copy Components.

If the above conditions are met, the backup has been known to end in Status 0 even though the DFSR data is skipped.

Formal Resolution:
The resolution to this issue (Etrack 1925329) is included in the following release:
-NetBackup 7.0.1

This resolution can be downloaded from the following:  http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/343752

Workaround:
If a fix is not applied, all backups of DFSR data must be done using the flat file method, outlined in the following document:
 http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/340248.htm

If this workaround is not feasible, please call Technical Services (Referencing this TechNote and Etrack 1940549) to obtain an engineering binary.

Best Practices:
Symantec strongly recommends the following best practices:
1. Always perform a full backup prior to, and after any changes to the NetBackup environment.
2. Always make sure the NetBackup environment is running the latest version and patch level.
3. Perform periodic "test" restores.
4. Subscribe to technical articles.
