Issue

A backup of a Virtual Machine using the Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI) completes successfully however the Job Log reports a very small byte count and the Restore Selections do not show the *.VMDK files

Cause

An AVVI GRT or non GRT backup of a Virtual Machine hosted in VMware environment completes successfully but the job log reports a very small byte count. The Restore selections only report the Virtual Machine log files and other configuration files. The VMDK files are not displayed in the Restore Browse view.

This happens if there is an exclusion added for the VMDK files selection list for the backup job OR in the Global Excludes list for Backup Exec.

On the Backup Exec console this can be confirmed under the Edit menu->Manage Selection lists. On the Manage Selection Lists Window highlight Excludes and select Edit. An exclusion for *.VMDK files may have been added as indicated in Figure 1.

Solution

Remove any excludes that may be defined for the *.VMDK files in the individual selection list or Global Excludes.
