A recently created Software Delivery task was advertised to the target collection computers, but none of them were able to download and run it. The agents on the individual computers would attempt to download the package and then eventually schedule a time that it would retry downloading it, but it would never complete the process of downloading the package and running it.

An examination of the Agent logs showed the following error being returned (excerpt):
Date: Feb 28 03:18:59:003
Source: PackageDelivery
Description: Error while downloading package: No package sources returned by server (-2147023728)

On the logs on the Notification Server server showed the following error (excerpt):

Source: Altiris.NS.StandardItems.SoftwareDelivery.SWDSupport.ManageDistributionPoints
Description: Unable to create the distribution shares for package "Office2003 SP2" (Guid: Office2003 SP2).
Reason: The package location is not on a fixed drive

Notification Server 6.0.5287
Software Delivery Solution 6.1

When the package was created via the Package Wizard, a mapped drive to another server J was selected as the source directory/path. When the process to build/refresh packages ran on the NS, it determined that drive J was not a reliable or fixed drive and did not complete building the package or snapshot for it.

Follow the steps below to resolve the problem:
  • Move the program files used in the package to a volume-drive and path local to the NS.
  • Change the package properties to reflect the new location of the program files.
  • Go into the Notification Server "Scheduled Tasks" and run the task NS.Package Refresh.{<guid>}. This will speed up the package snapshot process, but is not a mandatory step.
