Scheduled software delivery task does not execute

Issue



You create a software delivery task to execute only at a specific day/time.  When you look to see if this task has executed you notice that it has not.  After further review of the Altiris Agent log files, you notice that before the scheduled execution time, you have the following error:

Notification Server 6.0 SP3

Software Delivery Solution 6.x

Cause



In this particular situation, the error prior to the execution time of the scheduled software delivery job, was caused by Dell Client Manager Agent Settings > Agent Settings Policy.

This was scheduled to run at five minutes prior to when the software delivery task was scheduled to run.


Solution



In this case, the resolution was to disable the Agent Settings Policy for Dell Client Manager Agent Settings.  You can also change the scheduled time so that it does not run close to the time of your scheduled software delivery task.

To help further diagnosis this error, look in the altiris agent log files, for an entry stating something similiar to this:

Description: Queueing task cf2f1681-22ea-446c-a5a7-83b5514f82df for execution at 03:02:00 on 11/04/2010 Next Run 40279.126389 Now 40279.126389

Notice the GUID used for the task ID cf2f1681-22ea-446c-a5a7-83b5514f82df.  This GUID is randomly generated by each client.  So you could then go to the client machine, look in the \Altiris\Altiris Agent\Queue directory for an XML file which will have this GUID as its name.  Open this XML file and look for the true name of the task.  You can then match this up back on the Notification Server to determine the culprit.
