How to setup compression for the Deduplication Option in Backup Exec 2010.

Solution

Edit the PD.CONF file, setting the COMPRESSION statement to = 1.
The pd.conf file is located under x:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\pd.conf, where x: is the drive where Backup Exec is installed. Use wordpad to edit the file.

This setting must be set on both the media server and any remote servers being utilized by deduplication.  Understand also that by adding this process to the backup that there will be some hit on performance.  There are however too many variables to say what that impact or how small an impact that might be.

NOTE:  This should only be done to a new deduplication folder before any backups have been written.  If this is applied after backups have been run, compression probably would not be realized as copies of much of the target data, may already exist in the deduplication folder and only parts of the modified data might be considered for compression.
