Problem
In Backup Exec 2010, a backup of a Virtual Machine with two Virtual Disk that reside in different datastores and have the same name, only one of the Virtual Disk will be backed up
Solution
Introduction:
An issue has been identified in Backup Exec 2010 (revision 2896) and ESX 4.0. If a backup job using the AVVI agent attempts to back up a Virtual Machine that has two Virtual Disks of the same name, only one of the Virtual Disks will be backed up.
What is Affected:
At the time of this writing, the problem is only know to occur with the Backup Exec 2010 (revision 2896) AVVI agent when trying to protect ESX 4.0
Severity: High
Probability: Medium
(For information on severity and probability levels, refer to this technote: http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/305269 )
How to Determine if Affected:
This issue can be confirmed by checking the selection list for the backup job. If only one Virtual Disk file is listed for a Virtual Machine that has more than one disk, only the listed Virtual Disk file will be backed up. The job log for the backup will show a successful completion status and will only list the Virtual Disk that was backed up.
Formal Resolution:
This issue is addressed in the following hotfix for Backup Exec for Windows Servers 2010 (revision 2896)
Backup Exec 2010: http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/344584
Workaround:
All virtual machines that have Virtual Disks on two or more Datastores should be backed up by selecting the machine in the Network, with the Agent for Windows Servers (AWS), and not through the VMware host.
Best Practices:
Symantec strongly recommends the following best practices:
1. Always perform a full backup prior to and after any changes to your environment.
2. Always make sure that your environment is running the latest version and patch level.
3. Perform periodic "test" restores.
