The NetBackup Desktop/Laptop Option (DLO) 6.1 MP5 maintenance pack incorrectly handles configuration of encryption. As a result, some data backed up under previous DLO versions cannot be restored without corrective action. In addition, new backups are taken unencrypted. This pack has been removed and a replacement 6.1 MP5A pack was released.

Solution

Overview:
A defect has been discovered in NetBackup Desktop/Laptop Option 6.1 Maintenance Pack 5 (MP5) which results in an incorrect processing of encryption settings to backups.  Backups subsequently taken under this version of DLO are not encrypted, even when the encryption setting is enabled.

How to Determine if Affected:
This issue ONLY affects clients where the 6.1 MP5 maintenance pack has been applied.

To see if encryption has been enabled for a specific Backup Selection, examine the profile options by navigating to the Setup tab > Settings > Profiles > (double-click on profile) > Backup Selection tab.  Select a Backup Selection and click on the Modify button.  If a warning message appears, click OK.  The Backup Selection dialogue will open - select the Options tab.  Examine the checkboxes under Transmission and Storage (Figure 1):

If Encryption is checked, the client will be affected.

Impact:

  • Once upgraded to MP5, clients will not be able to restore encrypted data from previous versions
  • In addition, if Delta File Transfer is enabled, backups taken under MP5 will ALSO not be restorable.  (Backups taken under MP5 without Delta File Transfer enabled will be restorable.)
  • All data backed up under MP5 will not be encrypted, regardless of configuration
The behavior of the restore and errors reported will vary depending on additional configuration, but in all instances the restore will fail.

Note: In certain situations, restore attempts from previous versions may appear to succeed and success may be reported; however, the data will not actually be restored and it will not be found in the destination path.

Formal Resolution:
The formal resolution to this issue (Etrack 2012433) is in the following patch release:

  • NetBackup Desktop/Laptop Option 6.1 Maintenance Pack 5A (MP5A)
This maintenance pack is available at the following locations:

Workaround:
There is currently no workaround at this time.  If DLO 6.1 MP5 has been applied and restores are failing, please contact Symantec technical support to obtain an emergency fix for this issue.

This maintenance pack was removed from general availability.  If it has been downloaded but not yet applied, Symantec recommends this maintenance pack not be applied and that customers wait for availability of its replacement maintenance pack instead.
