Problem

Backup fails with error V-79-10000-11232: VSS Snapshot error. Problems occurred when the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot provider attempted to communicate with the writers. Check that the writers are in a stable state by typing VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS at the command line, and then run the job again.

0x80042315 - 0x80042315 (2147754773) AOFO: Initialization failure on: "System?State". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

Backup- AOFO: Initialization failure on: <resource name>. Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

ERRORS IN EVENT VIEWER:

Event ID 34: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The VSS event class is not registered. This will prevent any VSS writers from receiving events. This may be caused due to a setup failure or as a result of an application's installer or uninstaller.

Event ID 12291: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error on creating/using the COM+ Writers publisher interface: CoCreateInstance(CLSID_VssEvent) [0x80040154].

Event ID 8224: The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout.

Solution

Unable to backup system resources when AOFO is selected in job properties. To resolve the issue please follow the below steps :

1. Go to the properties of the backup job - Under AOFO - Select VSS - Use Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider.

2. Verify if "Volume Shadow Copy" and the "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy" services are stopped and set to manual on the target servers.

3. From command prompt, run VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS and confirm if the status of all the writers are stable. Reboot if the issue persists.

4.Try installing KB 940349 MS patch for VSS only for windows server 2003.For windows server 2008 try a reboot and if it doesn't work Please contact MS for further assistance.
