Install of Backup Exec fails with error executing AddBackupOperatorSecurityRights


Solution



When Installing Backup Exec and receiving the above error, check the bkupinst.log to see where the error occurs.

The Install log will be found in:

Windows 2003
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs

Windows 2008
\Program Data\Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs


Possible log output.

In the above text, the first "Executing AddBackupOperatorSecurityRights" is adding security to the file system.  The second occurrence is adding the Backup Operators built-in account to the Symantec registry keys.

Resolution:

Ensure that System has rights to change security setting in the Registry and that the Backup Operators built-in account exists.

If the account does not exist, please contact Microsoft to correct the issue.  Built-In accounts should never be missing.
