Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) level restore selections for Microsoft Exchange Information Store is not available after backing up an Exchange Virtual Machine using the Backup Exec Microsoft Hyper-V Agent to Tape.

Sometimes it is observed that the Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) level restore selections for Microsoft Exchange Information Store is not available after backing up an Exchange Virtual Machine (VM) using the Backup Exec Microsoft Hyper-V Agent to Tape.

The individual VM does show up in the restore selections and lists its individual volumes (C:\, D:\ etc) but it does not list the Exchange Database selections.

The backup job log also shows that the "Exchange Application" was detected on the VM but restore selections are incomplete.

The job log may report sucessful in the job monitor but when reviwing the job log there is and error section with Hypen Entries (Figure 1).

Cause

The GRT process could not load ESE.DLL, and results in the operation failing. The ESE.DLL fails to load because of missing Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Packages. When backing up to tape using GRT process, the VHD files need to be mounted on the Hyper-V host server for which these packages need to be available there.

Solution

Install the following Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Packages on the Hyper-V Host server(s)

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x64)
 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=BD2A6171-E2D6-4230-B809-9A8D7548C1B6&displaylang=en
