Setting up Deduplication Folders and Antivirus scanning.

Solution

Antivirus solutions have an impact on Backup Exec Deduplication folders.  Whether or not to actively monitor a Deduplication folder with your antivirus scanner is dependent on the Backup Exec media server's environment.  This is a decision that is left up to the administrator of the system.  This technote describes the impacts of antivirus activities on the Backup Exec Deduplication folder so you can make informed decisions.

  • It is strongly recommended not to allow the antivirus software to automatically remove suspected files from the Deduplication folder.  Removing a single data file in the Deduplication folder can result in the loss of all the data in the Deduplication folder resulting in a need to completely delete and restart with a new Deduplication folder.

  • Scanning the Deduplication folder and just issuing alerts when a virus signature is located is preferable.  At least the administrator will be aware that there may be a problem in the Deduplication folder.  However, even if there is a virus signature in one of the Deduplication data files, it could not be removed without corrupting the folder.

  • Any real time scan of the Deduplication folder will have some impact on the performance of the jobs targeted to the folder.
