ERROR 3:

V-79-10000-11231 - VSS Snapshot error. Unable to get minimum quiet time for physical volumes. Reduce the activity on these volumes, or wait and run the backup when there is less activity on the volumes.

Environment

Windows Server 2003

Cause

If there is a third party VSS provider installed such as "HP Storage Works MSA2000", then Backup Exec is incorrectly choosing the third party VSS provider or perform the VSS snapshot instead of Microsoft's VSS provider.  The job will then fail with either "Error 1" or "Error 2" as shown above.

Solution

Open the command prompt on the affected server and please enter the command vssadmin list providers if the output shows any third party provider other than 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0' then the wrong provider is being used for the backup and the correct one manually needs to be selected.

1. Under Settings in the Backup Job Properties Enable the Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) by checking "Use Advanced Open File Option"  and under Open file configuration select "Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service Windows 2003 and later).

2. Scroll to "System - Use Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" under Snapshot provider:

3. Rerun the backup job and it will be successful.

NOTE:  In some instances the third party Snapshot provider may need to be uninstalled from the System. If the 3rd party VSS provider can't be removed form the System Please contact Symantec Technical Support.
