Issue

Restore of a virtual machine to the source datastore, after deleting and recreating the datastore, fails with the error "0xe000957e - Unable to create the new virtual machine."

Cause

Restore job can fail if one or both the below cause are valid:

1. The datastore to which the virtual machine belonged was deleted and recreated after the backup.
2. The virtual machine is being restored to the original location without using the redirect restore option.

Solution

This behavior is by design because once the datastore is deleted and re-created, it is assigned a new GUID. And Backup Exec checks for the old GUID during restore if option to run re-direct restore is not selected.

Work-around

Create a restore job to re-direct the virtual machine to the same Datastore.

Solution

Apply Service Pack 2 for Backup Exec 2010 R3 TECH170602
