During a restore job of individual Exchange items, beremote.exe on the Exchange 2010 Client Access Server may crash.

Solution

When attempting to restore individual items from an Exchange 2010 backup with Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) enable, the restore may fail with the following error.

Connection to the restore target has been lost.  Operation canceled.

This failure is caused by beremote.exe crashing on the Client Access Server in the Exchange 2010 environment.

On the Exchange 2010 Client Access Server the System Event log will show the following error at the time of the restore job failure:

Log Name:       System
Source:            Service Control Manager
Event ID:           7034
Task Category:  None
Level:                Error

Computer:
Description:
The Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this ## time(s).

Solution:

This issue will occur if the user specified in the Resource Credentials tab of the restore job does not have a mailbox associated with it. (Figure1) Creating a mailbox for this account will resolve the issue. Note: The mailbox cannot be hidden from the Global Address List.

Resolution:

This issue has been resolved with Hotfix 351400 for Backup Exec 2010.  See related documents for more information.
