The following errors appear in Log.Liveupdate:

4/5/2010, 20:21:42 GMT -> EVENT - SERVER SELECTION FAILED EVENT - LiveUpdate failed to connect to server liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com at path via a HTTP connection. The server connection attempt failed with a return code of 1813, Proxy or host authorization is incorrect

Cause

When LiveUpdate runs automatically, it is launched by the SYSTEM account. These errors arise when the proxy is not configured to allow the SYSTEM account access to the internet, preventing LiveUpdate from contacting Symantec's servers.

Solution

There are three possible solutions to this issue.

  1. Allow the SYSTEM account access to the internet by configuring your proxy's settings.
  2. Configure LiveUpdate to authenticate to the proxy with specified credentials.
  3. Create a scheduled task within Windows that causes LiveUpdate to run under a specific account. (Ideally, this account would be created for LiveUpdate's use only and would not be an account used elsewhere in your environment.)

Configuring LiveUpdate to Authenticate to the Proxy for the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager

  1. Login the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Console
  2. Click Admin
  3. Click Server
  4. Select your SEPM server
  5. Click Edit Server Properties
  6. Select the Proxy Server tab
  7. Fill out your proxy information
  8. Click OK

Configuring LiveUpdate to Authenticate to the Proxy for the Symantec Endpoint Protection Client

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel
  2. Open Symantec LiveUpdate
  3. Fill out your proxy information
  4. Click OK

Scheduled Task

For information on how to schedule LiveUpdate using the build-in Windows Scheduled Tasks ability, please see the Symantec documents referenced below.
