Issue

Attempting to select "Drives" in a backup policy in Backup Exec System Recovery Management Solution (BESR-MS) results in: Server Error in '/Altiris/Symantec.BackupSln.Web' Application. Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Error

Server Error in '/Altiris/Symantec.BackupSln.Web' Application.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Cause

When selecting "Drives" while creating a backup policy in BESR-MS, the error above may be displayed. (Figure 1)

Figure 1

Solution

From the BESR MS console, go to REPORTS, and run the VOLUME USAGE OF MANAGED COMPUTERS report. From this report, locate the computer(s) that are reporting the incorrect information back to the BESR MS console. Remove those particular computers from BESR MS console and then add them again.

The following list of items are some examples of incorrect information that may appear on the report and steps to take to resolve the error.

1. A blank space where a drive label such as C: should be located

2. Negative drive space usage
3. Any other anomalous information, such as non-existent drives

(Note: If you are comfortable with using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express, you can bypass the steps below by opening the table 'dbo.Inv_BESR_Volumes' in the BESR-MS database, located the machine name with the invalid data, as per the report you ran above, and deleting that entry. The agent will repopulate the BESR MS database with correct data upon the next scheduled interval).

To delete the machines from the Altiris Console:

1. Click on Start > All Programs > Altiris > Altiris console 7.0
2. Click on Manage and select Computers
3. Right click on computer and select Delete
4. Click on Home tab & then click on  Backup and recovery, select Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Management Solution
5. Click on Manage tasks and select computers to be removed.
6. Verify the computer is removed from the list

Note: In order to add a computer back in Computers under Manage Tasks, run domain discovery from the Home tab of Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Management Solution

To prevent the issue from reoccurring, it may also be necessary to perform the following:

1. On the client, stop both the BESR and Altiris services.
2. Remove, from the client, the Altiris agent client policy from C:\Program Files (x86)\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Client Policies
3. On the client (or from a system that can connect to this client and has a full standalone installation of BESR)
a. Launch the BESR console/UI
b. Go to the Advanced tab
c. Go to Drives and remove any drives not present or displaying bad information on the client system.
