Issue



During a File System Archiving (FSA) archiving run against a Windows 2008 server, errors occur and placeholders are not created for the files.  


Cause



Placeholders are not able to be created in Windows 2008 folders if the vault service account (VSA) does not have explicit permissions on the folders to be archived


Solution



This issue has been addressed as part of the following release:

If an upgrade is not an option, apply the hotfix below.
 
A. To which versions of Symantec Enterprise Vault (tm) can this hotfix be applied?
 
    1.This hotfix can only be applied to a file server running the 8sp2 FSA agent. The EV server managing the FSA task can be running any service pack version of 8.x

B. What issues does this hotfix resolve?
 
    1. Placeholders are not able to be created in Windows 2008 folders if the VSA does not have rights on those folders

C. Which file does this Hotfix replace?

    1. EVPlaceholderService.exe

    2. Evmf.sys

D. How to install this hotfix
Following steps to be performed on the target File Server:

   1. Backup of the following files:
        - EvPlaceholderService.exe
        - Evmf.sys

    2. Stop Enterprise Vault File Placeholder Service

    3. Go to the command prompt and run the following command using elevated permissions. Ie. open command prompt using "run as administrator"

        fltmc unload evfilter

    4. Copy the following file provided with HF to EV installation folder:  

        EvPlaceholderService.exe

    5. Copy Evmf.sys provided with HF at the following location

        C:\Windows\system32\drivers

    6. Go to the command prompt and run the following command

         fltmc load evfilter

    7. Restart Enterprise Vault File Placeholder Service
