Enabling the Tape Silvering feature for EMC Celerra NDMP backups result in failed backup jobs

Faulting application bengine.exe, version 13.0.2896.118, faulting module NdmpFHPlugin.dll


Cause



The Tape Silvering feature in EMC DART 5.5 and 5.6 is not compatible with the Backup Exec NDMP Option. The Backup Exec NDMP Option relies upon the DUMP or VBB format for NDMP backups of EMC Celerra devices.

The EMC DART OS Tape Silvering feature requires the TAR format in order to function properly.
The TAR format is not currently supported by Backup Exec as a supported backup format in NDMP or any other backup type.
As a result of these incompatible format , the Tape Silvering feature cannot be used by the Backup Exec NDMP Option and should not be enabled in a Backup Exec NDMP Option backup of EMC Celerra devices.

Solution



Symantec and EMC have jointly agreed that the architectural changes needed to either add TAR format support to the Backup Exec NDMP Option or DUMP support in the EMC DART OS to support the Tape Silvering feature are not part of the current respective product roadmaps. As a result, the Tape Silvering feature will be removed in the next release of Backup Exec and should no longer be used.

Symantec Corporation has acknowledged that the above-mentioned issue is present in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned at the end of this article. Symantec Corporation is committed to product quality and satisfied customers.
 
There are currently no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in the current or previous versions of the software at the present time. This issue may be resolved in a future major revision of the software at a later time.
