VMware credential validation fails: Login failed (-1)

Error

Login failed(-1)

Solution

NetBackup for VMware backups start failing with Status 156 after working in the past.  Reviewing NetBackup bpfis log on the VMware Backup Host shows backups are producing the following errors:

<32> bpfis: FTL - VMware_freeze: VIXAPI freeze failed unknown client <virtual_machine_name>

OR

<32> bpfis: FTL - VMware_freeze: Unable to locate VM <virtual_machine_name>

When verifying the virtual machine server credentials can be validated the following pop-up error is produced:

Vmware Credential validation failed. Login failed(-1)

Solution:

Verify that account used for virtual machine server credentials has not been disabled.  This account is usually a Microsoft Windows account on the VMware Virtual Center Server.
Try adding the domain name prior to the userid.  Example:  My.Domain.com\userid

Additional Notes:

To validate virtual machine server credentials or to determine what account is being used take the following steps:

1.  The VMware Credential Validation feature is available from the NetBackup Administration Console under "Media and Device Management > Credentials > Virtual Machine Servers"

2.  Along with the credentials stored for each Virtual Machine Server there is a check box available "Validate Credentials"

3.  After configuring the credentials (server type, username, password, port) click on the 'OK' button to initiate the validation process.
