Issue

Oracle icon is not visible in the Backup Exec selection list or the Oracle database is grayed out when installing and configuring the Backup Exec Oracle Agent 2010.

The following behavior might been experienced when installing and configuring the Backup Exec Oracle Agent 2010 either locally or on a remote server.

1. The Oracle Database is grayed out in the Backup Exec selection list
This behavior is observed when the Oracle tab in the Backup Exec Remote Agent Utility is not at all configured

2. No Oracle icon is visible in the Backup Exec selection list
This behavior is observed when the Oracle SID is configured in the Backup Exec Remote Agent Utility

Cause

From Backup Exec 2010 onwards, the Backup Exec Oracle Agent does a version check against the Oracle Instance.

Backup Exec Oracle Agent checks for the following files and if none of these files are found then the version will be defined as Oracle 11g.
  • For Oracle 8.0 it checks for the presence of \bin\rman80.exe
  • For Oracle 8.1, it checks for the presence of \bin\svrmgrl.exe
  • For Oracle 9i, it checks for the presence of \bin\isqlplus
  • For Oracle 10g, it checks for the presence of \bin\isqlplus.dll

Solution

To resolve the above issue the following steps can be performed on the Oracle server :

Warning:Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes

1. Run REGEDIT

2. Browse to the following path:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Agents\XBSA\Oracle RMAN Agent\SID\DBNAME (or SID NAME)

3. Confirm if a string value of the following is present
ORACLE_DBNAME

4. If the string value is not present please create a new string ORACLE_DBNAME

5. Set value = SID (Database Name)

6. Restart Backup Exec Services.

7. If the above steps fail to resolve the issue, the Remote Agent Configuration Utility will need to be reconfigured for the Oracle Database

NOTE:
The above steps are written for Oracle 9i, the registry path for newer versions of Oracle might be different.
