Issue

An B2D error - spnRequest: Initialize() CreateFileMapping failed (SPN_DeviceMemory). Error=5 - is reported during a backup if Backup Exec Service Account (BESA) has insufficient privilege. Especially, this is caused when BESA is the LocalSystem account.

Error

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Backup Exec
Event Category: None
Event ID: 33808
Date: 7/25/2010
Time: 2:08:40 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER01
Description:
An error occurred while processing a B2D command.
spnRequest: Initialize() CreateFileMapping failed (SPN_DeviceMemory).  Error=5

Cause

Backup Exec uses a shared memory for Symantec Protection Network (SPN) even if the option is not installed. Advanced Device and Media Manager can create the shared memory even though Backup Exec Service Account (BESA) has insufficient privilege. However, Remote Agent cannot access to the shared memory, if the shared memory is created with insufficient privilege. Thus, the error is reported during a backup.

Solution

Set BESA to a local administrator if the Media Server is in workgroup.
Set BESA to a domain administrator if the Media Server is in a domain.
