Environment

Problem

When performing Block Level Incremental Backups(BLIB), it is a necessary to enable Changed Block Tracking option in vSphere.  If this option is not enabled, then you are not truely performing Block Level Incremental even if the VM is VMX version 7.  Any BLIBs performed without Changed Block Tracking enabled on the disk/VM, cannot restore the incremental jobs.

Error

EXIT STATUS 5: the restore failed to recover the requested files

createVMwareVM: createVMwareVM: vmcGetObjDetails failed with status 14

Solution

Verify Changed Block Tracking is enabled on the virtual disk and perform a new Full Backup before running any new incremental backup jobs.

Perform the restore from the Full Backup and then restore the File Level information from the incremental backups.
