Backups done with the Symantec Backup Exec NDMP Option fail with the below mentioned errors depending on whether the backup selections were made from the user defined selections or NDMP Server node. The backups fail only when the checkbox "Display progress indicators for backup jobs. This requires additional time to pre-scan devices." is checked under Backup Exec User Interface menu - Tools - Options – Preferences. Note that the selected data is backed up.


Error



"0xe0008488 - Access is denied" occurs when the selections are made from the user defined selections.

"0xe0000f04 - The media server could not connect to the remote computer. The remote computer may not be running the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows/Linux. Make sure that the correct version of the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target computer" occurs when the selections are made from the NDMP server node.

Environment



Media Server Version : Symantec Backup Exec 2010 or Backup Exec 2010 R2

Media Server Operating System : All supported versions listed on the Symantec Backup Exec Software Compatibility(SCL) list of the respective version.

Remote Server Operating System / NDMP Filer :
This issue has currently been identified with Symantec Backup Exec NDMP Option backups of data from Network Appliance NDMP Servers. All Data ONTAP Versions listed on the Symantec Backup Exec Hardware Compatibility List(HCL) of the respective version are applicable.


Cause



Display progress indicators for backup jobs is selected which requires additional time to pre-scan devices


Solution



- Under the Backup Exec Graphical User Interface (GUI) -

    Go to  Tools - Options - Preferences, uncheck the checkbox "Display progress indicators for backup jobs. This requires additional time to pre-scan devices."

 Note :- The pre- scan progress  take time to access the data and effect communication.
