Error (0x80042301) from VSS - VSS_E_BAD_STATE

UMI: V-79-57344-34070

Environment

Exchange 2010 with a renamed database.

Exchange server has not been rebooted since the name change.

Cause

Since the Exchange server has not been rebooted after the database name change, VSS  is not aware of the new name. Backup Exec requests the snapshot of the new name and VSS  fails saying it does not exist.

Solution

  1. Reboot the Exchange server so VSS is aware of the new database name and run the backup job.

  2. If reboot does not resolve the issue, then re-install the remote agent on the Exchange server, and then retry the backup job.
