NetBackup for VMware backups jobs for Windows 2008 or 2008 R2 virtual machines intermittently fail with status 156

Error

14:22:13.877 [2792.2656] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vmwareLogger: WaitForTaskCompleteEx: Cannot create a quiesced snapshot because the create snapshot operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I/O in the frozen virtual machine.
...
14:22:13.908 [2792.2656] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vSphere_freeze: vmcCreateSnapshot failed with 36

Environment

Virtual machine host OS is Windows 2008

NetBackup server is at version 7.0

Cause

This issue is occurring because disk UUID based application quiescence is enabled for the virtual machine and that operation is failing.

Log details shows that the vStorage API encountered an error while taking a snapshot:

14:22:06.690 [2792.2656] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vSphere_freeze: creating snapshot for /uuid/42312a00-f322-fa6f-5498-8b907650f956: Created by bca-bdvmas-01 on Thu Oct 28 14:22:06 2010

Solution

To fix the issue, the root cause behind disk UUID based quiescence needs to be investigated. As this feature is based on the VSS provider bundled with VMware tools framework, please work with VMware on this matter.

Alternately, the application quiescence based on disk UUID may be disabled. To do this, there are two options:

A. Set the disk.EnableUUID parameter in the virtual machine settings to False by performing the following steps:

a) Power off the Windows Server 2008 virtual machine through vSphere Client.
b) Click Settings > Options >General > Configuration Parameters.
c) Set disk.EnableUUID to False.
d) Save the settings.
e) Power on the virtual machine.

 or

B. Disable application quiescence alone using the following process.

a) In the guest,create the file: %SystemDrive%\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools\tools.conf
b) Add the following to the file:
[vmbackup]
vss.disableAppQuiescing = true
c) Restart the VMware Tools Service or restart the guest.
