Issue



VSS writer failures may occur when Backing up Exchange 2003, 2007 and 2010 as running 'VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS' shows no available Microsoft Exchange VSS writer.


Error



E000FED1 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status.


Solution



To enable to Microsoft Exchange VSS writer:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
 

DWORD: Disable Exchange Writer

If its there and set to 1, set it to 0 and restart the Exchange Information Store Service. [Please note, when you restart this service, users will be disconnected from Exchange].

Note: If the registry key is not there, create the value and set it to 0.
