Items to verify when starting to troubleshooting Exchange Agent backups.


Solution



1. Remote Agent for Windows Servers is installed and started on the Exchange Server.

2. Backup Exec "Logon Account" belongs to Domain Administrators group

3. Backup Exec "Logon Account" is an explicit member of Local Administrators group in the Exchange Server (implied membership via Domain Administrators for example may not be sufficient)

4. Mailbox of Backup Exec "Logon Account" is not "hidden" within Global Address List.

5. Backup Exec "Logon Account" is "Unique" inside the Exchange Organization.  See  "How to confirm that an Exchange mailbox name is unique within the Exchange organization when configuring Backup Exec to back up Exchange mailboxes"

6. For Exchange 2007:
 

A. Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects is installed on the Exchange 2007 Server, and the Backup Exec Media Server.

B. Exchange 2007 Management Tools are installed on the Media Server. Please note that the update levels for the management tools need to match between the Exchange server, and the Backup Exec Media server.

If the media server is 64bit please use the installation media used to install the Exchange server

7. For Exchange 2010:

A. Exchange 2010 Management tools are installed on the Backup Exec server. Please note that the update levels for the management tools need to match between the Exchange server, and the Backup Exec Media server.

B. Make sure the ID used by Backup Exec is added to the Organization Management group of Exchange Roll Based Access Controls (RBAC).
