The Virtual Disk service terminated unexpectedly

When NetBackup performs a Shadow Copy Components or System State backup, a System Event Log error is generated saying the Virtual Disk Service terminated unexpectedly.
The Virtual Disk service enters the running state, then terminates unexpectedly. Microsoft reacts to this by starting the Virtual Disk service.
This is the sequence of events as observed in the System Event Log:
Information 11/1/2010 2:19:59 PM Virtual Disk Service 3 None Service started.
Information 11/1/2010 2:19:59 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None The Virtual Disk service entered the running state.
Error 11/1/2010 2:20:14 PM Service Control Manager 7031 None The Virtual Disk service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
Information 11/1/2010 2:21:14 PM Virtual Disk Service 3 None Service started.
Information 11/1/2010 2:21:14 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None The Virtual Disk service entered the running state.
This occurs with the combination of NetBackup 7.0 and newer on all Windows platforms including Windows 2003, Windows 2008, Windows 2008R2 on both 32 and 64 bit.
At the beginning of the backup, NetBackup intentionally starts the Virtual Disk service to see if any mounted volumes are virtual in nature. NetBackup then attempts to stop the Virtual Disk service, but does so incorrectly resulting in the 'service terminated unexpectedly' error.
This issue should be mostly cosmetic in nature. The backup job is unaffected by this event and completes normally.
The only unexpected result of 'service terminated unexpectedly' error is that Microsoft takes corrective action and starts the Virtual Disk service after the event. This leaves the Virtual Disk service in a 'Running' state, whereas normally it is not 'Running'.
Symantec acknowledges this is an issue in NetBackup 7.0, 7.0.1 and 6.5.6.
Contact Symantec Technical Support and reference TECH146531 and Etrack 2174275 to obtain a fix for this specific issue for NetBackup 7.0.1, or Etrack 2206134 for a client bundle of fixes which has Etrack 2174275 rolled in.
This issue is formally resolved in:
bpbkar32.exe causes the Virtual Disk service to stop improperly.
