Issue

In Backup Exec releases prior to 2012, the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers crashes on bedsrman.dll. This occurs when the user expands the physical nodes in a selection list of an Oracle 11G MSCS instance utilizing failsafe mode.

Environment

This issue occurs within environments that include the following configuration elements:

  • Oracle 11G installed on an MSCS cluster with Failsafe
  • Backup Exec 2010 or below.

Cause

The configuration is unsupported.

Prior to Backup Exec 2012, the Software Compatibility List (SCL) does not list Oracle 11g on MSCS cluster with failsafe as a supported configuration.

The SCL for 12.0, 12.5 and 2010 lists the following under the ORACLE support section:

  • Database 11g x86-32bit [3]
  • Database 11g x86-64bit [3]
  • RAC support for Windows and Linux

Under the CLUSTER section, the following Oracle cluster support is listed:

  • Oracle 9i Supported with RAC, Microsoft Cluster Server and FailSafe. [3]
  • Oracle 10g Supported with RAC, Microsoft Cluster Server and Oracle FailSafe. [4]

Solution

Upgrade the media server to Backup Exec 2012, where full support for Oracle 11g, Microsoft Cluster Server and Oracle FailSafe is provided per the Backup Exec 2012 SCL.  Please see related articles to view the full Backup Exec 2012 Software Compatibility List (SCL).
