Known service group states in VERITAS Cluster Server 1.3.x, 2.x and 3.x for Solaris and HP-UX

Solution

Here is a list of the known service group states. All these states are local to each system or node. Do not confuse these states with resource instate (internal state of a resource) and resource state.  Knowing how each service group state functions will help to understand how VERITAS Cluster Server (VCS) works and help in writing triggers to customize the VCS environment.

OFFLINE  - All non-persistent resources are offline.

ONLINE  - All resources whose AutoStart attribute is equal to 1 are online.

FAULTED - At least one critical resource in the group is faulted or is affected by a fault.

PARTIAL - At least one, but not all, resources whose AutoStart attribute is equal to 1 are online in the group.

STARTING - Group is attempting to go online.

STOPPING - Group is attempting to go offline.

NOTE : It is possible that a group state is a combination of  any of the multiple states described above. For example, OFFLINE|FAULTED.

Both hagrp  -state and hastatus  -sum will show the group state. Here is a sample of a hastatus -sum output which shows the File_test group is OFFLINE|STOPPING on sysA and instate of the mount resource from the vip service group.

#hastatus -sum
