This article describes the steps needed to format an SafeNet eToken Pro. These instructions assist in the event that an SafeNet eToken needs to be reset to the factory settings or reset to a new password/PIN. These instructions in this document are specific to Windows operating systems.

Solution

This article describes the solution to reset an SafeNet eToken Pro to the default factory settings or to resolve issues related to a unknown or forgotten eToken password.

Note:

  • The eToken Pro 64k is capable of 2048 bit keys, but the 16k and 32k models are only capable of 1024 bit keys. This may or not require additional configuration steps. This information is available on a separate document on this site.
  • PKI Client software can be used to configure your token and is purchased separately through Aladdin.
  • The use of PIN, password, and passphrase for the eToken are used synonymously.
  • Updated versions of the utility may be available by visiting the web site www.aladdin.com

The screen shots and directions included in this article utilize version 3.65 of the SafeNet RTE.  This was provided with legacy versions of PGP Desktop and has since been replaced with the PKI Client Software.

Install SafeNet eToken Properties

Download and install the eToken Properties software.

  1. Open the folder containing the SafeNet eToken software.
  2. Double-click the installer to start the install wizard. Continue through the prompts of the wizard, and click Finish when done.
  3. Insert the eToken, and wait for Windows to acknowledge that it has found new hardware and that the hardware is ready for use (indicated by a pop-up balloon window near the system tray).

After installation, the program is installed with the default settings and appears in the eToken folder under Start>All Programs.

Enable eToken Initialization

These instructions enable the Initialization button in the SafeNet eToken Properties software. This allows you to format the SafeNet eToken. To enable this feature in the SafeNet eToken Properties, you will need to edit the Windows Registry.

Warning: Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the computer.

To enable the Initialization button, copy and save the block of text below into a text file. Save the file as 2048 Enable.reg and then double-click on the file to enter it into the registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aladdin\eToken\eTProperties]
@=""
"Advanced"=dword:0000001f

The program screen in eToken Properties will now display the Initialization icon button.

Format eToken

From Start>All Programs, open the eToken Properties program and insert an eToken into an available USB port. After inserting the eToken, an eToken icon will now appear below the Local Machine icon. This screen will also allow the password of the eToken to be changed.

To format the eToken, click on the Initialize button and select Start to format the eToken.

You may also configure additional settings on the eToken by changing settings by clicking the Parameters button. (Options include password, name, and other key settings)

Disable eToken Initialization

To disable the Initialization button, copy and save the block of text below into a text file. Save the file as 2048 Disable.reg and then double-click on the file to enter it into the registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aladdin\eToken\eTProperties]
@=""
"Advanced"=dword:00000001

The program screen in eToken Properties is reset to the default settings and the Initialization icon button is no longer displayed.
