HOW TO: Configure the manual proxy in PGP Desktop for Mac

In some cases, PGP Desktop for Mac OS X displays a warning message to use Manual Proxy Mode. This article details how to configure the manual proxy for PGP Desktop for Mac.


Solution




To configure Manual Proxy mode on Mac OS X:

Enable the PGP Desktop manual proxy option: Click Preferences -> Messaging -> and then click the Proxy Options button. Then select Manual Proxy using IP: 127.0.0.1 and click OK.

1. Open PGP Desktop select PGP Messaging.

2. Delete the PGP Messaging service that is not working correctly. This is accomplished by Ctrl-click the name of the service (or right-click it if you are using a two button mouse) and select Remove Item from the shortcut menu. The service is deleted.

3. Stop PGP Desktop services and then exit PGP Desktop if it was open.

To stop PGP services:

Press and hold down the Option key and then select Quit from the PGP Desktop icon in the Menu bar.

4. Verify you can send and receive email with PGP Messaging services stopped.

5. Open your email client and write down your email account settings (including user name, email address, incoming and outgoing mail server, incoming mail server protocol, and any non-standard mail server ports).

6. Close your email client and restart the PGP services by opening PGP Desktop.

7. Manually create a PGP Messaging service using the account settings you wrote down.

Click Create New Service or from the Messaging menu, select New Service. The New Service screen appears.

8. Enter the Incoming and Outgoing Email Server as you wrote down from your email Client.

9. Click on Settings next to the Incoming Mail Server setting.

10. In the Server Settings window select POP or IMAP for the incoming Mail Server and write down the Redirect local port # to this server (You also need the port number for the Outgoing Server).

11. Open your email client to change the configuration of you email account.

12. Open the Account Information tab and change the Incoming Mail Server to 127.0.0.1

13. Select the Outgoing Mail Server box and click Edit List. Enter 127.0.0.1 as Server Name and enter the Outgoing server Redirect port number from the Advanced tab in the PGP Desktop Settings.

Note: Do not select to Use Secure Sockets Layer SSL for the account. PGP Desktop always attempts to upgrade an unprotected connection to the mail server to SSL protection because an SSL-protected connection not only protects any non-PGP-encrypted messages on their way to the mail server or coming from it, but it also protects your mail server authentication passphrase when it is sent to the mail server.

14. Click OK and go to the Advanced tab on your account window and enter the Redirect port #### from the PGP Desktop Settings.

15. Close and restart your email client.
