Issue

This article details an issue when performing DVD Shadowing with PGP Endpoint.

DVD/CD shadowing is the term used to describe the capture of data written/read to/from CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM media, its analysis, and extraction. The information is stored by the PGP Endpoint Administration Server and can be retrieved in summary form or with full file data using the Log Explorer module of the PGP Endpoint Management Console.

Note: This article applies to PGP Endpoint 4.3.1 and above.

When attempting to burn a DVD-R(W) or DVD+/-R DL with filename only shadowing, PGP Endpoint prevents the writing of data. A log event is recorded by PGP Endpoint stating: SHADOW-CD-R-MODE-UNSUPPORTED occurred.

Solution

DVD/CD shadowing is the term used to describe the capture of data written/read to/from CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM media, its analysis, and extraction. The information is stored by the PGP Endpoint Administration Server and can be retrieved in summary form or with full file data using the Log Explorer module of the PGP Endpoint Management Console.

The shadowing of a DVD-R(W) or DVD+/-R DL fails due to the specific (raw) nature of the image being written to the disk. It is not possible to parse (perform filename only DVD/CD shadowing) the writing of a single layer DVD-R(W) nor any type of write shadowing of a dual layer DVD+/-R DL.

Single layer DVD+R(W), DVD-RAM and CD+R(W) can be shadowed fine in filename-only mode.
