Issue




This article details how to update PGP Desktop in a managed environment.

Note: The automatic update feature has been disabled for standalone clients since PGP Desktop version 10.x

It is possible that if you have upgraded from PGP Desktop 9.x to PGP Desktop 10.x that the "Update" button is available. However, you will not be able to update as the update server is not available anymore. If you are using a standalone version of PGP  Desktop and you want to upgrade to a newer version, then please contact our Customer Care department. Note: If you are using PGP Whole Disk Encryption please note that the drive has to be either fully encrypted or fully decrypted. It is not possible update PGP Desktop if the drive is only partially encrypted. The installation will be interrupted.
 


Solution




If a new version of PGP Desktop is available, PGP Desktop can be updated manually or configured to automatically check for updates. 
 

Note: You have to have an administrative account on the PC, to be able to download and install updates. If you don't have an administrative account the newer version will not be downloaded and will not be installed. 
 

Automatic Updates

Automatic updates for PGP Desktop is enabled by default when PGP Desktop is installed. When enabled, PGP Desktop checks for software updates automatically at the specified interval. The default is one day. If a newer version of PGP Desktop is available for download, a notification screen is displayed that lets you download the new version.

 

  1. On the Windows Taskbar, right or left click on the PGP Tray icon and select Options. You can also access the PGP Desktop Options dialog by clicking the Tools menu in PGP Desktop and selecting Options.
  2. On the General tab, you can enable/disable PGP Desktop to automatically check for updates.
  3. The interval which PGP Desktop checks for updates can be configured from 1-30 days.
  4. Click OK to apply any changes to your settings.
Note: If you are using PGP Desktop in a PGP Universal Server-managed environment, this option may be required. PGP Desktop then searches for updates on its associated PGP Universal Server.


 

Manual Updates

You can manually check for updates for PGP Desktop from the PGP Tray icon or from within PGP Desktop.

To manually check for updates:

  1. Right or left click on the PGP Tray icon.
  2. From the menu select Check for Updates.

PGP Desktop then contacts the PGP Corporation update server to see if a newer version of PGP Desktop is available for download.

  1. Open PGP Desktop.
  2. Click the Help menu and select Update.

PGP Desktop then contacts the PGP Corporation update server to see if a newer version of PGP Desktop is available for download.
