Unable to Backup a PGP NetShare-protected Folder

This article details an issue with backing up a PGP NetShare encrypted folder.
PGP NetShare enables specific users to share protected files in a shared space, such as on a corporate file server, in a shared folder, or on removable media such as a USB drive.
One reason a backup of a PGP NetShare encrypted folder can fail is due to a PGP NetShare service that monitors access to the protected folder. If PGP Desktop is installed on the computer on which the backup process is performed, access will be denied to the PGP NetShare encrypted folder unless the user authenticates to the folder with a passphrase.
In a PGP Universal Server managed environment, an administrator can configure a PGP Desktop policy to bypass the automatic decryption of PGP NetShare files. Within the PGP Desktop Settings for an Internal User Policy you can select to the option to Prevent the automatic decryption of files by the following applications.
When selected, encrypted files are never automatically decrypted when accessed by the specified applications. These applications are provided the on-disk file contents, including the PGP NetShare header and file cipher text. This feature is also referred to as decryption bypass.
To configure a policy to bypass a PGP NetShare folder
- Log in to the PGP Universal Server administrative interface.
- Click the Policy card then select Internal User Policy.
- Select the policy to update and click Edit button next to PGP Desktop Settings.
- Click the PGP NetShare tab.
- Scroll down and place a checkmark next to Prevent the automatic decryption of files by the following applications:.
- Place a checkmark next to the appropriate backup application. If the backup program is not listed, select Other and type the application process names separated by semi-colons.
- Click Save twice to update the policy.
