Upgrade Mac OS X 10.6 with PGP Desktop

This article describes how to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6 with PGP Desktop installed.
If you are upgrading your computer to a new major release of Mac OS X (such as from 10.5.x to 10.6), be sure to uninstall any previous versions of PGP Desktop before upgrading to the new version of Mac OS X.
Prior to upgrading your system to Mac OS X 10.6, use the following to ensure your data is protected.
Backup PGP keysTo back up your private key
- In the Smart Keyrings item, click My Private Keys.
- Select the icon representing your keypair.
- From the File menu, select Export.
- Type a name for the file in the Save As field and specify a location in the Where field.
- Select the Include Private Key(s) check box. This is important, because if you do not do this, only your public key will be exported.
- Click Save.
- Copy the file to a secure location. This may be a CD which you carefully archive, another personal computer, or a USB flash drive that you keep in a safe location. Please remember not to distribute this file to others, as it contains both your private key and your public key.
Decrypt PGP Whole Disk Encrypted DisksIf your system disk is encrypted with PGP Whole Disk Encryption, you must decrypt the disk before upgrading the system to MAC OS X 10.6.
To use PGP Desktop to decrypt a disk
- Open PGP Desktop, ctrl+click on the disk you want to decrypt, and choose Decrypt. The Enter PGP Passphrase dialog box is displayed.
- Enter the passphrase to unlock the disk and click OK. The Decryption Progress displays in the PGP Desktop window.
- The time it will take to decrypt the disk is displayed in the PGP Desktop window. To pause or cancel the decryption process, click Stop.
|Note: This article applies to upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6, however these precautions can also apply to other upgrades to Mac OS X.|
Once you have upgraded your version of Mac OS X, you can then reinstall PGP Desktop.
