Problem

When attempting to install Avira AntiVirus Premium on a system with PGP Desktop 9.x, 10.x or Symantec Encryption Desktop (SED) 10.3.0 installed. You receive the error listed below.

Error

The installation of the LSP failed. Mail Protection and Web Protection therefore cannot be installed...

Environment

Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.0 (SED) or PGP Desktop 10.2.1 or older

Microsoft Windows

Cause

By clicking OK you can continue the installation on Avira AntiVirus, but the MailGuard and WebGuard components are not installed. After Avira is installed,  Symantec Encryption Desktop (SED) cannot process encrypted email messages over SMTP/POP/IMAP.

These issues occur due to an Layered Service Provider (LSP) conflict in Windows between Symantec Encryption Desktop and the Avira AntiVirus Premium software

Solution

Workaround

This solution has two scenarios.

Scenario 1 is if you wish to have Symantec Mail Encryption for POP3/IMAP/SMTP protcol but don't need Avira Mail Scanning feature enabled. Scenario 2 is if you want the Mail Scanning feature enabled but wish to disable Symantec Mail Encryption for POP3/IMAP/SMTP.

Scenario 1:

You wish to be able to use Symantec Mail Encryption with Symantec Encryption Desktop and are willing to not use Avira AntiVirus for Mail and Web Protection

1. Uninstall Avira AntiVirus Premium.

2. Re-install and license Avira AntiVirus Premium.

3. Reboot the system.

4. Re-install Symantec Encryption Desktop then reboot the system.

Note: You can then use Symantec Encryption Desktop for mail encryption, but the Mail Protection and Web Protection from Avira will be deactivated due to the fact that the LSP of Symantec Encryption Desktop is installed. Currently this is the only workaround that enables you to use Symantec Encryption Desktop for mail encryption over SMTP/POP/IMAP. It is not possible to use mail encryption with Symantec Encryption Desktop and Mail Protection and Web Protection from Avira at the same time on one system

Scenario 2:

1. Uninstall Symantec Encryption Desktop (which may require you to decrypt if you are using Drive Encryption) or download a newer version of the Symantec Encryption Desktop client installer

2. Reinstall the product using the following MSI switch in the run line or command prompt:

msiexec /i pgpdesktop.msi PGP_INSTALL_LSP=0

Note: This disables our LSP driver which is used for the POP3/SMTP/IMAP Mail Encryption.
