Unable to Set Up Avira Antivirus Premium 2012 with PGP Desktop

When attempting to install Avira AntiVirus Premium on a system with PGP Desktop 10.2.x and older installed, you receive the following error:

The installation of the LSP failed. Mail Protection and Web Protection therefore cannot be installed...



 

Note: This article applies to versions of PGP Desktop 10.2.1 and older.  For Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.0 see the following article.


Solution



By clicking OK you can continue the installation on Avira AntiVirus, but the MailGuard and WebGuard components are not installed. After Avira is installed, PGP Desktop cannot process encrypted email messages over SMTP/POP/IMAP.

These issues occur due to an LSP (Layered Service Provider) conflict in Windows between PGP Desktop and the Avira AntiVirus Premium software.

Workaround

  1. Uninstall PGP Desktop.
  2. Uninstall Avira AntiVirus Premium.
  3. Re-install and license Avira AntiVirus Premium.
  4. Reboot the system.
  5. Re-install PGP Desktop then reboot the system.

Note: You can then use PGP Desktop for mail encryption, but the Mail Protection and Web Protection from Avira will be deactivated due to the fact that the LSP of PGP Desktop is installed. Currently this is the only workaround that enables you to use PGP Desktop for mail encryption over SMTP/POP/IMAP. It is not possible to use mail encryption with PGP Desktop and Mail Protection and Web Protection from Avira at the same time on one system.

Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.2
