failed to start the remote registry service - PGP Endpoint

Issue




When selecting a computer to install PGP Endpoint using the Client Deployment Tool, you receive the error:

Failed to start the remote registry service


Solution




This error can be due to various settings or access on the client system. Check the following areas which may affect the installation using the Client Deployment Tool.

  1. Check the local admin rights on the computer.
  2. Confirm the Remote Registry service is not disabled on the computer.
Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7

  • Click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools.
  • Double-click Services.
  • Scroll down to and double-click the Remote Registry service.
  • Confirm the Startup type is NOT disabled.
  1. Check the permissions for the winreg folder in the Windows Registry.
Windows XP

  1. Click Start>Run.
  2. Type regedit and click OK.
  3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\winreg.
  4. Right-click the winreg folder and select Permissions.
  5. Confirm the permissions include the proper user account or group.
  6. Close the Registry Editor.
Windows Vista & Windows 7

  1. Click Start.
  2. Type regedit in the Start Search field, and then click the regedit result in the Programs list.
  3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\winreg.
  4. Right-click the winreg folder and select Permissions.
  5. Confirm the permissions include the proper user account or group.
  6. Close the Registry Editor.
