Issue

The Foundation Edition (FE) of Windows Server 2008 is fully supported by Backup Exec 2010 R2 for both Media Server and Remote Agent installations and the Software Compatibility List (SCL) contains entries that confirm this support. The SCL can be found at:  www.symantec.com/docs/TECH137682

Some Operating System installations report, in the System Properties, that the Windows Edition is "Windows Server FE", however, splash/logon screens and some management consoles within the Operating System indicate that components of Small  Business Server (SBS) are present. While Backup Exec can still support this type of installation, because, the Operating System does not report as a Small Business Server Edition, the configuration is not supported by the Backup  Exec Small Business Server License. Installations that report the Foundation Edition remain supported by standard Backup Exec licenses and if database technologies (such as Exchange or MS-SQL) are present then the appropriate remote agent licenses will also be required.

This limitation will affect both Media Servers running directly on the Foundation Edition server itself and Media Servers using the new Backup  Exec 2010 R2 capability to use the Small  Business Server license on the Hyper-V host.

Attempting to use the Backup  Exec SBS License will return an error (provided below). Please see  www.symantec.com/docs/TECH125965  for more information.

Error

"The license key you entered can only be used on a Small Business Server"

Cause

The Small Business Server edition of Backup Exec does not support any Operating systems that do not report as a Small Business Edition.

Solution

To backup any Windows Server 2008 edition that reports itself as the 'Foundation Edition' use a standard Backup Exec Media Server license along with the appropriate Remote Agent licenses.
