Issue

When running vx commands from the commandline interface like vxprint or vxassist they are failing.

Error

V-77-57616-2: Server Initialization failed

Cause

This problem can be observed when the location of the binaries is not correctly loaded in the path.

Solution

The path variable

1) Open the Windows System properties by right clicking My computer and selecting properties or with running START  >  RUN  >  sysdm.cpl

2)  Open the Advanced Tab and open the Environment Variables

3)  In the Environment Variables under System Variables select the Path variable and select Edit.

4)  Check if the following locations are present in the path:

For 64 bit installation of Storage Foundation for Windows on Windows Server 2003:
C:\Program Files\Veritas\Security\Authentication\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Veritas\VRTSobc\pal33\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager 5.1\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Veritas\Veritas Object Bus\bin

For 32 bit installation of Storage Foundation for Windows on Windows Server 2003:
C:\Program Files\Veritas\Security\Authentication\bin;C:\Program Files\Veritas\VRTSobc\pal33\bin;C:\Program Files\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager 5.1\;C:\Program Files\Veritas\Veritas Object Bus\bin

For 64 bit installation of Storage Foundation for Windows HA  on  Windows Server 2008:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Veritas\Veritas Object Bus\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Veritas\VRTSobc\pal33\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager 5.1\;C:\Program Files\Veritas\comms\llt;C:\Program Files\Veritas\comms\gab;C:\Program Files\Veritas\Cluster server\bin;C:\Program Files\Veritas\Cluster server\bin\VCW

For 32 bit installation of Storage Foundation for Windows HA on Windows Server 2008:
C:\Program Files\Veritas\Veritas Object Bus\bin;C:\Program Files\Veritas\VRTSobc\pal33\bin;C:\Program Files\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager 5.1\;C:\Program Files\Veritas\comms\llt;C:\Program Files\Veritas\comms\gab;C:\Program Files\Veritas\Cluster server\bin;C:\Program Files\Veritas\Cluster server\bin\VCW

5)  If any of the locations are missing in the path, add them to the path statement.
The easiest is to select all in the path Edit window, cut and paste it into notepad and add the missing paths, add the locations to the beginning on the path and make sure the ; are between the paths and no spaces are existing.

6)  Once the path is correct cut and paste it back to the Path Edit window and click OK

7)  Reboot the node to load the updated path.

8)  If the commands are still failing contact Technical Support to troubleshoot further.
