Error "VPShellRes.dll could not be found" after uninstalling Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0

After uninstalling Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 11.0, right clicking any file generates "VPShellRes.dll could not be found"

VPShellRes.dll could not be found


Solution



Note: This article describes steps that change values in the Windows Registry. Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

Start > Run > type "Regedit" and click ok

Click on file menu > Export > Browse and select the location of the file.

Below are the registry keys that are recommended to be removed to stop the error.

Delete the following key(s):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\LDVPMenu
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\LDVPMenu
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\LDVPMenu
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\LDVPCTLS.LDVPActionsCtrl.1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\LDVPCTLS.LDVPEditCtrl.1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\LDVPCTLS.LDVPExtensionsCtrl.1

Browse to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellExtensions\Approved and delete the following value in the right pane:
{8BEEE74D-455E-4616-A97A-F6E86C317F32}"="LDVP Shell Extensions

Restart the Machine.
