Issue

Synthetic full backups end with an error if all backup templates are targeted at the the same Removable Backup-to-Disk Folder.

Error

0xe000e35d - The destination device that is selected is the same as the data source device.

Cause

Removable Backup-to-Disk Folders only allow a single operation at a time. When a Synthetic backup runs, it needs to read from the source media (the most recent Synthetic and Incremental backups) while writing to the destination media (the new Synthetic backup). As a single Removable Backup-to-Disk folder does not allow the necessary 2 operations to be performed at the same time, the job will end with the error listed above.

Solution

Create a standard Backup-to-Disk (B2D) folder on the removable drive instead of a Removable Backup-to-Disk Folder and use that for all backups.  In the properties of a standard B2D folder, it can be specified to allow multiple concurrent operations:

1.  Go to the Devices tab

2.  Expand Backup-to-Disk Folders

3.  Right-click on the Backup-to-Disk folder and select Properties

4.  On the General tab there is a setting for Allow concurrent jobs for this Backup-to-Disk Folder where X represents the number of concurrent operations.  Change this value to at least 2 and then click OK

It is also seen that even though the Baseline, Incremental and Synthetic jobs are targeted to disk and duplicate to tape, the synthetic backup goes to tape instead, causing the duplicate job to fail. It can be verified by reviewing the job log for the Synthetic backup and checking the destination of the backup. In such situation, recreate the backup policy by creating a new jobs for baseline, incremental, synthetic and duplicate backups.
