Issue

Synthetic Backups are not supported on Deduplication Storage Folder

Cause

Synthetic backup requires a Backup-to-Disk folder. Backup Exec does not provide the option to create a Synthetic Backup Template on a Deduplication Folder. Synthetic Backup Job to a Deduplication Folder would end up doing twice the work for little additional gain. If a new full backup is desired, make a full backup to the deduplication folder.  Only new data is backed up, and the full backup is available from the deduplication folder just as it would have been from a Synthetic full backup.

Solution

Backup to Disk folder (Exclude Backup Exec Deduplication Folder) should be used to perform synthetic backups.

Note that in 2012, a Backup to Disk folder is referred to as "Disk Storage"
