How to enable the "Restrict Anonymous"option in Backup Exec for Windows Servers.


Solution



This option can be manually enabled in the registry.


To modify the value of the key, do the following:

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

1. Launch the Registry Editor by running the command Regedit or Regedt32.

2. Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SOFTWARE | VERITAS | Backup Exec | Engine | NTFS  (for Backup Exec 9.x and 10.x)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SOFTWARE | SYMANTEC | Backup Exec For Windows | Backup Exec | Engine | NTFS  (for Backup Exec 11.x and above)


3. Modify the "Restrict Anonymous Support" DWORD value to 1 (Figure 1).

4. Stop and restart the Backup Exec services.
 

 
Note: Modify this value on the Backup Exec server and remote server.
 

5. Exit out of the Registry Editor console.

In Backup Exec 10.x onwards, the Restrict Anonymous support can be enabled through the BEUTILITY program as well.
 

 

 
1. Open BEUTILITY located in the:
 

 
<Install Dir\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\NT> directory (for Backup Exec 10.x)
 

 
<Install Dir\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec> directory (for Backup Exec 11.x and above)
 

 

 
2. In the  BEUTILITY console, right-click All media servers and select New media server (Figure 2)

3. In the Select media server window, click Browse and select the media server (Figure 3)

4. Once the media server is selected, select the Check media server status check box and click OK (Figure 4)

5. Right-click the media server in the right pane and select Edit configuration (Figure 5)

6. Finally, under the Edit Media server configuration box, select the Enable restrict anonymous support check box and click OK (Figure 6)
