Problem
After upgrading to Adobe Acrobat Reader X (10.0.1+) archived .PDF files can no longer be opened while they can be opened with other software or previous versions of the software.
Error
There was an error opening this document. Access is denied.
Environment
This happens when accessing files archived by Enterprise Vault on a network share when mounted as a mapped network location with a drive letter assigned.
Cause
This is usually caused if Protected Mode is turned on within Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is the default setting. This mode uses a sandbox mechanism to interact with the file system which causes the process to not have enough permission to recall offline .PDF documents archived by Enterprise Vault.
Solution
1. Open the Adobe application, click on Edit > Preferences > General.
2. Uncheck Enable Protected Mode at startup.
3. Restart Adobe Reader for the change to take affect
As an alternative to disabling Protected Mode is to try to access the network share by using its UNC path instead of a mapped driver letter. This should prevent the error.
