Issue

The Backup Exec Job Engine crashes when running a redirected restore job to Isilon IQ series device in operation in Backup Exec 2010 and Backup Exec 2010R2.

Error

THE INVESTIGATION:

This issue was found during internal testing by the Compatibility Lab.  It was found that Isilon OneFS (5.5.7.9 and higher) implements 64 bit NDMP inode numbering. Backup Exec support 64 bit inode numbering for its engine but it converts this value to 32 bit-integer for cataloging. This causes a loop in the catalog entries resulting in a Backup Exec Job Engine crash during a selective restore job.
Error:
Faulting application bengine.exe, version 13.0.4164.111,
time stamp 0x4d0cbd8e, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005.

Environment

Isilon OneFS 5.5.7.9 and higher

Cause

Isilon OneFS implements 64 bit NDMP inode numbering. Backup Exec support 64 bit inode numbering for its engine but it converts this value to 32 bit-integer for cataloging. This causes a loop in the catalog entries that results in a Backup Exec Job Engine crash during a selective restore job.

Solution

WORKAROUND:

• Rerun the same restore job with the DAR option disabled.
• Avoid restoring individual objects and restore the entire backup set instead.

RESOLUTION:
Engineering is pursuing a hotfix for Backup Exec 2010R3, and will publish a technote that explains the issue and the workaround for all affected versions of Backup Exec 2010.
