Technical Solution

 When backing up a Virtual Machine that has Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange Server or Active Directory installed on it and Application GRT is enabled, if the data for these applications is stored on an iSCSI or SAN drive the backup will fail with one of the following messages.

Error 1:
Final error: 0x3 - The system cannot find the path specified.
Final error category: Other Errors

Error 2:
Final error: 0xe000fedf - A failure occurred reading an object.
Final error category: Resource Errors

Error 3:
V-79-57344-65247 - Error. Cannot backup directory \zzzVirtApp000zzz and its subdirectories.
The debug log (BEREMOTE) on the media server will show one of the following errors:

Debug error 1:
[fsys\brfs]          - brUtil::OpenActiveObject Information: Active Object is a Directory "DRIVE LETTER"
[fsys\brfs]          - brUtil::OpenActiveObject Error: 0xE00084AF Could not open the object DATABASE NAME.mdf "PATH TO DATABSE FILES"
[fsys\ohfs]         - OFF_HOST_FS::ReadObj( ) pBrUtil->ReadObject( ) Error status CODE (E00084AF)
[mounter]        - UpdateSqlPdi: failed to read object info 0xe000fedf

Debug Error 2:
[fsys\shared]        - Attach to \\SERVERNAME\Microsoft Information Store\DATABASENAME
[mounter]              - UpdateExchangePdi: unable to find any files in '\\?\DRIVE:\B2D\IMG######\MP00\T\Exchange Data\E0*.log'
[fsys\shared]        - Detach from \SERVERNAME\Microsoft Information Store\DATABASENAME
[mounter]            - CommonMounter::MountSomeApp: UpdateExchangePdi processing error 3 0x3
                               | UNEXPECTED ERROR(0x00000003): Failed to mount Virt-App

This error occurs when the application data (databases) are stored on a drive that is not part of the virtual machine configuration.

Example Virtual Machine:
C drive is located on drive1.vmdk
D drive is located on drive2.vmdk
E drive is located on a NAS device connected to the virtual machine via iSCSI or SAN

In this configuration Microsoft SQL 2008 is installed on the virtual machine with the default data path for the databases is pointed to a directory on the E drive.

When a backup of this virtual machine is performed only the C and D drives are backed up, the E drive is skipped. The GRT process of the backup starts during the job it is unable to mount the E drive to build the restore selections for the E drive, which causes the job to fail with one of the above error messages.

Note: This issue can also occur if the data files for the application are stored on an RDM drive.

Application GRT is not supported in this configuration since all of the drives are not backed up by AVVI.

To allow for individual item restore from the SQL, Exchange and Active Directory agents a remote agent backup will have to be performed for that application.
