After installing Hotfix 143746, backups of Exchange 2007 LCR enabled storage groups to tape fails with "0xe00002f7 - Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup. Review the job log for more information."

When attempting to backup the Active copy of an Exchange database with LCR enabled to a tape device the job will fail with "Unable to complete the operation for the selected resource using the specified options for the following reason: VFF Open Failure. This can be caused by low memory or disk resources." after Hotfix 143746 has been installed.
Note: Hotfix 143746 has been rolled into Service Pack 1 for Backup Exec 2010 R2

Backup the passive copy of the LCR enabled database to tape
Backup the active copy of the LCR enabled database to disk, then run a duplicate job to tape.
EXCH: Tape based backup of a LCR enabled database fails with VFF Open Failure error if the job is configured to backup from the Active Copy
