 Upgrade of Backup Exec hangs during the install and application event id 18456 is produced. This will more than likely occur during the "validating install" phase of Backup Exec's installation.

The username that is in application event id 81456 lacks SQL permission needed to complete the upgrade. 


 On the database that you are trying to access, grant read permissions to the account. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open SQL Server Management Studio, and then connect to the instance of SQL Server 2005 that holds the database to access.
  2. Expand Security, and then expand Logins.
  3. Under Logins, make sure that the account under which the application pool is running appears. If the account does not exist, right-click Logins, click New Login, and the follow the steps to create a login for this account.
  4. Expand Databases, expand the database to access, and then expand Security.
  5. Double-click the login for the account. If the login for this account does not appear under Security, follow these steps:
    • Right-click Security, and then click New User.
    • In the Login name box, type the login for the account.
  6. Under Schemas owned by this user, click to select the db_datareader check box, and then click OK.
